Why is an Ethernet cable better than Wi-Fi?

Ethernet and Wi-Fi both connect your devices to the internet, but they do so in different ways.

Wi-Fi provides convenience and mobility. Ethernet uses a physical network cable and normally offers a faster, more stable and more predictable connection.

Why is Ethernet more stable?

Ethernet is not affected by the same wireless conditions as Wi-Fi.

A wired connection is less vulnerable to:

  • Distance from the router
  • Thick walls and floors
  • Neighbouring Wi-Fi networks
  • Wireless interference
  • Signal strength
  • Devices moving around the property
  • Congested Wi-Fi channels

This makes Ethernet particularly useful for applications that require a steady connection.

Is Ethernet always faster?

Ethernet is usually capable of more consistent speeds, but the equipment must support the required speed.

For a package above 100 Mbps, check that:

  • The router has Gigabit Ethernet ports
  • The computer supports Gigabit Ethernet
  • The cable is Cat5e or better
  • Any network switch supports Gigabit Ethernet
  • The wired link has negotiated at 1 Gbps

An old 100 Mbps port or cable fault can limit the connection below 100 Mbps.

When should I use Ethernet?

Ethernet is recommended for:

  • Desktop computers
  • Gaming consoles
  • Smart televisions
  • Media-streaming devices
  • Work-from-home computers
  • Video conferencing
  • Network storage
  • Security-camera recorders
  • Devices used for speed testing

Devices that remain in one place are often better connected by cable.

Is Wi-Fi bad?

No. Wi-Fi is ideal for mobile devices and general use.

It is normally the most practical option for:

  • Phones
  • Tablets
  • Laptops used around the property
  • Smart-home devices
  • Equipment that cannot be cabled

However, Wi-Fi performance depends heavily on the router, device, distance and surrounding environment.

Why does PacketSky request a wired speed test?

A wired test removes most Wi-Fi-related variables.

This helps establish whether:

  • The fibre service is providing the expected performance
  • The router’s internet connection is working correctly
  • The problem is limited to the Wi-Fi network
  • The testing device or cable is creating a bottleneck

A poor Wi-Fi test does not, by itself, prove that the fibre line is slow.

Which Ethernet cable should I use?

For most home and small-business connections:

  • Cat5e supports Gigabit Ethernet over normal installation distances
  • Cat6 provides additional performance headroom
  • Damaged or poorly terminated cables may negotiate at a lower speed
  • Very old cables should be replaced when troubleshooting

The cable category is usually printed along the cable jacket.

What if my device does not have an Ethernet port?

Many thin laptops no longer include a built-in network port.

You can use a suitable USB-to-Ethernet adapter, but make sure it supports Gigabit Ethernet. Some low-cost adapters are limited to 100 Mbps.
